Butler Leadership Studies Program

At Butler Community College, we strive to develop dedicated, responsible, involved, lifelong leaders who will make a significant difference in their business, community, organization, or state - both today and in the future.

This program is especially valuable because of its unique combination of academic and theoretical knowledge, with practical, hands-on leadership experience. Participants are encouraged to concurrently be active with student organizations or to utilize life, military, Service-Learning, volunteer, or work experience as a subject for class discussion, participative activities, and writing assignments.

The cornerstone of the above goal is our new Leadership Studies program. We hope to:

  • increase individual student's awareness of their own leadership potential
  • develop qualified leaders to serve in a variety of capacities (business, civic, church, etc. )
  • foster and cultivate the attitudes, behaviors, and values associated with effective leadership
  • reward student volunteerism and service that gives back to the community, engages future leaders, and develops interpersonal skills

LS Studies courses available:

LS 150   Exploring Leadership, 3 credits

LS 160   The Emerging Leader, 3 credits

LS 220   Team and Community Building, 3 credits

LS 230   Leadership Development, 3 credits

Courses are offered in

regular classroom or online format.

The Leadership Studies Program, developed in 2003, includes four leadership studies classes (three of which were developed as a result the award). The award also funds several leadership/ service-learning scholarships for students. See specifics below.

Butler Leadership Studies courses will incorporate service-learning and the Grizzly Adventure Challenge Course into class activities. Community partnerships will expand and be enriched through the service-learning/civic responsibility activities initiated by the Leadership Studies Program.

Student Leaders meeting at Butler

Using the Social Change Model of Leadership Development (Higher Education Research Institute, 1996) premises, the leadership studies classes will promote the values of equity, social justice, self-knowledge, personal empowerment, collaboration, citizenship and service.   This program will empower students with the skills and attitudes necessary to be civic leaders.   These courses are also a good supplement to any collegiate area of study. **

** Butler Leadership Studies credits are accepted as general studies electives at many four-year programs and varying hours of credit are accepted into the Leadership major or minor at some Kansas four-year leadership programs.   When in doubt, check with your academic advisor.

Butler's Leadership Studies program was made available through a congressional award in 2003 to create the Butler Leadership Credentialing Initiative: An Innovative Program for Student, Community, and Corporate Leadership.

The contents of this program were developed under an award from the U.S. Department of Education; however, those contents do not necessarily represent the policy of the Department of Education and you should not assume endorsement by the Federal Government.
