Butler Community College Tutoring Program has a Level I CRLA program certification. This designation indicates that the tutors in the program have received specialized training.
Upon Successful completion of the required training, the tutors will be awarded a CRLA pin indicating this achievement. Tutors benefit from having this recognition by including it on their resumes.

Additional information about the certification is from the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) web site: http://www.crla.net

If you have reviewed the Tutors' schedules for both BOA and BOE, and do not see what you need, please use this request form to let us know what subjects, days, or times you need.

THE INTERNATIONAL TUTOR PROGRAM CERTIFICATION

History: Since March 1989, over 700 college and university tutorial programs in the United States and Canada have received tutor training certification through CRLA's International Tutor Program Certification (ITPC).

Purpose: The purpose of this program is twofold. First, it provides recognition and positive reinforcement for tutors' successful work from an international organization, CRLA. Second, its certification process sets a standard of skills and training for tutors.

Endorsements: CRLA's ITPC has been endorsed by the National Association for Developmental Education, Commission XVI of the American College Personnel Association, The American Counsel of Developmental Education Associations, Association for the Tutoring Professional and the National Tutoring Association.

LAST MINUTES ARE DANGEROUS: it is NOT recommended that any students intentionally put off assignments and homework assuming that a Tutor can quickly catch-you-up. Academic success takes time and preparation on your part. Please read all instructor-assigned materials and start your assigned projects before a Tutor appointment.

Academic learning with friends works better for many students, such as this student in the AAC tutoring room.

What Tutors CAN do:

  • review your class notes
  • clarify concepts
  • answer questions
  • explain and/or demonstrate problems
  • interpret your prior test results
  • provide study skills or direct you to the proper

Independent Study course

Independent Study Course

  • give suggestions for test-taking and

note-taking strategies

DO: start meeting with a tutor early in the semester and DO maintain a good, working relationship with your tutor until you can do the work on your own. As space allows, students may study in the areas where the tutors are stationed.

Studying near your tutor is a good idea; in the Gayle Krause Learning Labs (in the 600 Building at Butler of El Dorado), or in the BOA 5000 Learning Lab (room #5202u) just in case you have questions just before or just after your tutoring session.

These students learn better in small groups with a peer tutor.

What Tutors CANNOT do:

  • your homework
  • introduce new concepts
  • help you with take-home tests
  • review a whole-semester's work in a few sessions
  • write your papers or provide more than suggestions as

you outline or refine a paper
