COURSE OUTLINE
HONORS INDEPENDENT STUDY IN (SUBJECT AREA)

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

HR110. Honors Independent Study In (Subject Area). 2 hours credit. Prerequisite: Honors Director's approval. The content of the course will vary with the nature of the project. The purpose of the course is to enable a student to pursue a creative activity in which the student will grow intellectually, or improve a skill or talent in an area outside the realm of typical classroom activities. The process begins with a proposal, followed by the execution of the problem or task and finishes with the presentation of paper, performance or some other appropriate presentation.

TEXTBOOK:

The textbook required will vary with the nature of the project.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define a problem, identify alternative solutions and write a proposal for solving the problem.
  2. Solve a substantially sophisticated problem with the help of a faculty member.
  3. Produce a polished finished product that represents a successful solution to the problem or mastery of the task or documentation of the process involved.

TOPICAL OUTLINE OF UNITS:

The topics covered will vary with each instructor.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

The mentor faculty will work with the student on a one-to-one basis.

METHODS OF EVALUATION:

The grading will vary with instructor depending on the specific discipline. The mentor faculty will award the grade. Honors credit will be awarded by the director or representative(s) from the Honors Committee based upon successful completion of the proposal.

ADDENDUM:

The number hours credit will be commensurate with the work expected in a similar credit hour course. For example, for two credit hours a student would be expected to spend as much time as would be required in a course with 32 contact hours.
