Prepare for a career giving care to others with a variety of course schedules to fit your needs.

A great deal of the day-to-day care provided in nursing homes, assisted living communities and other long-term care settings are performed by a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA). While you are working under supervision of licensed nurses, the role you play in residents' healthcare puts you in the best position to get to know them and keep a close watch on their condition.

Butler's comprehensive CNA program prepares you to take the exam developed by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS). Our formula for small class sizes and instructors who work closely with students has produced a pass rate of more than 95 percent for the state certification exam. Some students continue their education in the Patient Care Pathways program, while others begin careers as Nurse Aides.

Required paperwork to be submitted the first day of class:

  • Negative TB test with dates/results current within one year of last clinical date or chest X-ray current within five years of last clinical date.
  • A physician’s statement of good health with no restrictions.
  • Copy of social security card.
  • Copy of Driver’s License.
  • If you have had the Covid vaccine, please bring a copy with you.
  • If the clinical site is requesting Covid vaccine exemption forms from students that have not received the Covid vaccine, your instructor will inform you of this request the first day of class and provide the form.

NOTE* #1 and #2 above are available at College Health Services or health care provider of your choice.

Textbook information:

  • You will not need to purchase a textbook for the course as one is included online in Canvas.

Clinical information:

Uniforms will be needed for the clinical portion of the course:

  • A purple (grape) polo or purple scrub top and khaki or black scrub pants.
  • Uniforms may be purchased at the BCC bookstore (the bookstore will only have the khaki scrub pants, not black scrub pants) or from a store of the student’s choice.
  • Shoes must be closed toe and closed heel and clean.
  • Students will also need a watch with a second (sweep) hand.
  • Students should wear comfortable street clothes in the classroom/lab..

NOTE: Nurse Aide classes/clinical may be required to meet during the day, evenings or on weekends.


NOTE: Nurse Aide students will pay a fee for the state exam when they enroll. This appears as a course fee and will be collected with tuition.

State Exam for CNA

Allied Health will notify you of your state testing date and time. You must successfully complete the AH 122 Certified Nurse Aide course with a C or above before you are eligible to take the exam. The state exam is regulated and written by the Kansas Department of Aging & Disabilities Services.

The cost of the exam is collected with your tuition payment. All fees are nonrefundable.
