The Scan and The Quill Student Journals
Have some awesome poetry or a short story you want to publish?
Did you write a great research or analysis paper?
Have some visual or digital art you’d like to show off?
If so, submit to The Scan or The Quill! These two journals publish the best work of Butler’s students, faculty, staff, and alumni every spring. See below for details!
The Quill
The Quill, Butler’s journal of creative writing, features the best creative work of the year from students, staff, faculty, and alumni. We usually feature poetry and short fiction, but feel free to send drama and creative non-fiction as well! Submissions are open year-round, with one issue printed each spring. The faculty advisor and/or editing staff of the Quill will make final decisions regarding approval of submissions. Please email entries to scanandquill@butlercc.edu.
The Scan
Our second journal focuses on academic writing. If you have an analysis or research paper you’re proud of, send it our way! We accept submissions from any division. Submissions are accepted year-round, with one issue published each spring. The faculty advisor and/or editing staff of The Scan will make final decisions regarding approval of submissions. Please email entries to scanandquill@butlercc.edu.
Submission requirements
All submissions should be saved as a .doc, .docx, or .rtf. and be attached in an email to scanandquill@butlercc.edu.
Creative submissions:
The Quill is looking for creative fiction or non-fiction of less than 7,500 words or poetry of ten pages or less. We appreciate sharp imagery, interesting language, and new and fresh ideas.
Academic works:
The Scan is searching for analysis or research-based essays with solid logic, clear argumentative strategy, and good use of contextual evidence to support ideas. Please submit essays in either MLA, APA, or Chicago style.
Art:
We’re looking to showcase Butler’s art scene in both of our journals. If you’re interested in publishing your artwork, please send it our way. We will be looking to add a digital format this year, which allows for more expansion into other realms of artistic works. Please email what you have!
If you have any questions, please email The Scan and The Quill’s faculty advisor, Amanda Hash, at ahash@butlercc.edu.
