Check-In and Enrollment
New international students at Butler should review the information below to prepare for check-in and enrolling in classes. If you have any questions about these steps, email international@butlercc.edu.
These steps can be completed before you get here. We recommend doing these in advance to make your check-in process easier.
Arrival
International students should arrange travel to the Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport in Wichita (ICT), which is the closest airport. International students can request transportation to or from this airport if requested at least 1 week in advance. Airport transportation is not available in the week prior to the start of each semester or in the first week of classes. To request an airport pickup, complete the Airport Pickup Form and send it to international@butlercc.edu
Public Transportation
Public transportation is extremely limited around Butler Community College. Some options include:
- Uber
- Lyft
- Butler Transit (limited service)
- Taxi companies may provide services to the Andover or El Dorado campuses, but may be expensive.
Butler does not provide transportation to and from campus locations. Students who attend the Andover campus or who live off-campus should be prepared to find and arrange for reliable transportation to get to campus, such as purchasing a vehicle.
Checking In
New F-1 international students must check-in in person with International Office staff when they arrive. This can be done at either the Andover or El Dorado campus and is the first step for the pre-enrollment process. Bring your passport with you. Check-in is available on a walk-in basis Monday through Friday. Refer to your acceptance letter for your check-in deadline.
Andover Campus 715 E 13th St, Andover, KS, 5000 Building
Visit the Advising front desk and ask to see an International Advisor
El Dorado 901 S Haverhill Rd, El Dorado, KS, 600 Building
Visit the International Office desk in the Advising area; look for the “International” sign.
Insurance
All full-time F-1 international students are required to purchase health insurance coverage before enrolling in classes each term. Butler Community College does not provide medical insurance. Because healthcare in the United States is extremely expensive, we strongly recommend that students have continued coverage without gaps between semesters. Students must submit documentation showing active coverage for the term before enrolling. Coverage must cover the full academic term.
Insurance documentation can be emailed to international@butlercc.edu or to your International Advisor.
Students may search for health insurance plans and purchase any that meet the requirements below. A few companies that previous students have used include*:
*Butler does not endorse or recommend any specific company for insurance coverage
Insurance coverage must meet the following requirements:
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
- Coverage of at least $10,000 for repatriation of remains
- Coverage of at least $15,000 for medical evacuation
- A deductible per accident or illness not exceeding $500
- Include inpatient and outpatient coverage for sickness and accidents
For basic minor healthcare needs, consider visiting our College Health Services office first! Located at both the Andover and El Dorado campuses, College Health provides many services at a low cost or even free. Services include immunizations, prescriptions, lab tests, referrals for dental, vision, and well-woman care, health screenings, and more.
Placement Testing
All new students must take placement tests in English and Math before enrolling. Meet with an International Office Advisor or Specialist in El Dorado or Andover to get started on placement testing.
The first placement test is free. Students must bring a photo ID to take the placement test, such as a passport or student ID. We recommend allowing 3-4 hours for placement testing. Students should begin placement tests no later than 1pm.
If you wish to prepare for the placement tests, you can review study guides here:
English
https://www.butlercc.edu/info/200985/testing-services/152/english-placement-study-guides
Most international students will take the ESL English Placement test. The study guide for this test can be found in the ACCUPLACER app. Students can also study the Reading and Writing study guides for similar information.
Math
https://www.butlercc.edu/info/200985/testing-services/381/math-placement-and-study-guides
Students can prepare for the math placement by studying Study Guide Assessment #1 or #2.
Placement testing is used to guide enrollment, and your score will not prevent you from enrolling in classes, but is required before enrollment. Your advisor will use the test scores to help you enroll in the right classes for the semester.
TB Tests
International students from most countries must take a tuberculosis (TB) test in the United States before enrolling in classes, per Kansas Department of Health & Environment requirements. If you have had a TB test taken in the US within the last 5 years, you can submit a copy of those results to meet this requirement. TB tests can be taken for free at the College Health Office at either campus after you are admitted as a student. After completing the TB test, you will be given a paper saying you are cleared for enrollment. Give this paper to your International Advisor.
Contact the College Health Office to schedule an appointment for a TB test. International Office staff would be happy to help you schedule an appointment as well.
Enrollment
Once you have completed the pre-enrollment steps above, you are ready to enroll in classes! You must meet with an International Advisor to select your classes for the semester. Course enrollment must be done in person each semester. You must enroll before the semester begins. International Advisors are available on a walk-in basis. We recommend enrolling as early as possible for the best course availability, since course sections may fill and are not guaranteed. New student enrollment advising sessions typically take 30-45 minutes.
Andover Campus: International Advisors are available on a walk-in basis Monday-Thursday 9am-5pm, and Friday 10am-5pm.
El Dorado Campus: An International Advisor is available on most Wednesdays from 9am-5pm. Call 316-322-3230 or email international@butlercc.edu to set up an appointment for advising in El Dorado.
