Welcome to Butler County, Kansas!

 

Discover the Flint Hills and Tallgrass regions of our sunset-famous state as a resident of Butler County, Kansas. The three largest communities in Butler County, El Dorado (home to Butler Community College’s main campus), Andover (home to Butler’s 5000 Building and Redler Institute of Culinary Arts), and Augusta each have options for local shopping, entertainment, historic sites and buildings, and easily navigated downtown areas for pedestrians and drivers alike. The communities take pride in their collaborative community projects, churches, and thriving businesses.

Each smaller town of Butler County offers its own charm and friendly faces willing to welcome you to share coffee, or lunch, as you learn about the exciting opportunities in which to be involved. Butler County communities offer a sense of belonging and history.

El Dorado Lake Enjoy El Dorado Lake and its 8,000 acres of liquid fun and activities as well as many hosted concerts and annual community celebrations featuring both local and famous musicians. For active and outdoor loving individuals, gyms, two YMCA facilities, biking and hiking trails, athletic fields and courts, golf courses  and scenic areas for picnics are abundant. Butler County’s family-oriented focus for kids of all ages offers bowling alleys, skate parks, themed and local eateries and more. You can also attend one of the seasonal activities such as an impressive Christmas light trail in a family-owned, tree-lined pasture near  Towanda, Kansas.

 From very small, rural schools to the largest in Andover, nine unified school districts spread across Butler County. Highly qualified administrators, teachers, and support staff provide outstanding educational opportunities inside the classroom in addition to a host of athletic, fine arts, and extracurricular student-   focused activities. There is a deliberate focus on opportunities that equip and empower students toward successful futures. Butler County residents place education as one of the highest priorities.

School districts

USD 490 El Dorado Public Schools serves El Dorado students and the neighboring rural areas. A rigorous and well rounded education of musical and visual arts, foreign language, technology, and more are offered.

El Dorado Public Schools includes three elementary schools, a middle school, El Dorado High School and El Dorado Virtual school for grades K-12. An early childhood program for special needs students and a full day kindergarten are available. El Dorado Alternative High School is an option for high school students who thrive in a non-traditional structure.

Student to teacher ratios are low, giving students more valuable learning time. During the 2023-24 academic year, elementary classes had a 13.2 to 1 ratio, middle school classes had a 15.7 to 1 ratio and high school classes a 16.7 to 1 ratio.

Community support enhances the district services through a number of initiatives many of which are unique to
El Dorado:

  • Adopt-a-Class Mentoring Program, matching local businesses with graduating classes
  • Dolly Parton Imagination Library, providing a free book each month to preschoolers
  • I Can Read, one-on-one reading volunteers for second grade students
  • Kiwanis Health Grants, to provide for health needs in elementary schools
  • Rotary ACT, Dictionary and Social Skills projects
  • Partners In Education, a foundation supporting special projects and scholarships

 

USD 389 Andover Public Schools includes 6 elementary schools, two middles schools, Andover Central High School, Andover High School and Andover eCademy virtual school. Serving 47 miles of Butler and Sedgwick counties, USD 389 serves Andover and the east side of Wichita.

The Andover School District boasts National Merit Finalists and Semi-Finalists, ACT scores above state average, athletic and activity state championships, and regional and national recognitions presented to staff and programs.  

High School juniors and seniors who wish to explore career interests via mentorships, internships, and external real-world projects can complete some of their high school requirements at the Andover Center for Advanced Professional Studies (CAPS). Students combine college preparatory and career preparatory exploration through CAPS.

USD 389 serves about 5,700 students and an additional 3,000 through the virtual school, Andover eCademy.  

 

USD 402 Augusta Public Schools include three elementary schools, one middle school and Augusta High School providing an extensive curriculum, including a special education program.

The student to teacher ratio is approximately 15 to 1 allowing students the benefit of more personalized guidance in the classroom.

Numerous student organizations, activities and successful athletic programs enhance the educational offerings of USD 402. The Robinson Community Wellness and Resource Center, an all-ages center, is a repurposed and renovated elementary school which is free to the public.
