Butler Launches Safety App

Butler Community College has invested in state-of-the-art technology to help keep students safe. With the use of an app, students and staff can instantly connect with a campus police officer. The officer can virtually walk with them to a building, their car or a dorm room. Butler is the first college in Kansas to use this safety system.

“The GrizzlySAFE app is going to increase our visibility with students and bring the officers and the community we serve together at the touch of a button,” said Jake Kenney, Butler Community College’s Chief of Police. “The GrizzlySAFE app will not only help us combat crime, but it will send out important alerts to our Butler community.”

Instead of only getting a text message, Butler students, staff and visitors, who download the free app, will receive an alert on their phone if there is threatening weather, a campus closing or imminent danger. Students will also be able to locate emergency action plans at their fingertips.

Colleges across the country have started using this real-time, custom mobile safety app by AppArmor. These schools include the University of Florida, UCLA and the University of Nevada.

Butler has 11 officers who cover the Andover and El Dorado campuses. Eight full-time certified officers, two part-time officers and one public safety officer. The app operates for both iPhone and Android users.
