Butler students win 45 awards at 2022 Kansas Collegiate Media competition

Hands-on experience has long been a hallmark of Butler Community College’s Mass Communication department. Students eager to hone their journalistic skills can gain valuable experience within weeks of joining the Butler community. On-the-job training, experience, and guidance pay off in both personal satisfaction and public recognition. The pandemic notwithstanding, the recent efforts have paid off handsomely for Butler students. 

This year’s team of Mass Comm students has again been recognized for its hard work at the 2022 Kansas Collegiate Media (KCM) awards in Wichita April 10-11. 

Students were guided to their success by Mike Swan, the Grizzly Magazine adviser and Amy Chastain, the Butler Lantern adviser. 

The weekly Butler Lantern, currently a staff of four, captured 22 individual awards, and a Silver rating in the Overall Two-Year Newspaper Division. The list of Lantern awards includes the following: 

The Lantern staff as a team earned two awards for Newspaper Inside page/Spread Design for spring 2021 issues. The staff includes Ally Davis, editor-in-chief, Augusta High, 2020, Evan Dalian, managing editor, Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High, 2021, Jen Anima-Valdez, writer and photographer, Wichita North High, 2020, and Kira Dye, writer and photographer, Chester Lewis Academy, 2020. 

Ally Davis of Augusta: 1st place in Investigative/In-depth News, 3rd place in Breaking News, Honorable Mention in Infographics. 

Evan Dalian of Wichita: Honorable Mention in Profile Writing. 

Hallie Mayes of Andover: 2nd place in Portrait Photography, Honorable Mention in Feature Writing. 

Annette Bernsten of Conway Spring: 2nd place in Editorial Writing and in Investigative/In-depth News Writing, 3rd place in Investigative/In-depth News Writing. 

Naomi Galindo of El Dorado: Honorable Mention in Editorial Writing. 

Hayden Cole of Kansas City: Honorable Mention in Review Writing. 

The following students from Grizzly Magazine took home an array of awards including Silver for Overall Publication for a Two-Year Institution. 

Michelle Patry of Council Grove: 1st place in Feature Photography, 3rd place in Review Writing, Honorable Mention in Sports/Action Photography and in Overall Publication. 

Madeline Reida of Caney: 1st place in Headline Writing and in Illustration, Honorable Mention in Profile Writing and in Sports Feature Writing. 

Brayden Oneal of Fredonia: 3rd place Sports/Action Photography, Honorable Mention in Feature Photography and in Sports/Action Photography. 

Jayden Stanley of Caney: 1st place in Sports Feature and in Review Writing, Honorable Mention in Headline Writing. 

Rachel Mallory of Wichita: Honorable Mention in Feature Writing. 

Mariana Gonzalez-Rangel of Wichita: 2nd place in Review Writing, Honorable Mention in Page Design. 

Student Sports Media staff work alongside the Lantern staff. Their contributions appeared in the Lantern and/or online. The following students from the Sports Media program made their mark with nearly a dozen awards including: 

Together Adrian Holguin and the Sports Media staff earned 2nd place for Breaking News, and honorable mention for Social Media Reporting Series. 

Brayden Oneal of Fredonia: 3rd place and two Honorable Mentions in Sports/Action Photography. 

Adrian Holguin of Wichita: Honorable Mention in Sports Feature Writing and in Sports/Action Photography. 

Nick Butler of Wichita: 3rd place in Profile Writing. 

Kansas Collegiate Media is a college media organization designed to support and promote high academic and professional standards, support/promote the First Amendment, and support students and advisers involved in all forms of student media.
