Spelvin Award ceremony came back after two years of Covid-19

EL DORADO, Kan. – Students, faculty, staff, and friends gathered at the 35th annual Spelvin Awards ceremony May 12 to celebrate a year of accomplishments.   

The ceremony was hosted by Larry Patton, and awards were presented by Scott McPhail, Butler theatre alumnus and current executive at Paramount Pictures, zoomed in from Hollywood. “The Ballad of Kate the Shrew” won the Outstanding Acting Ensemble award.   

In addition, Joel Knudsen, Butler's instrumental instructor, and Nathan Huyett, Butler's theatre faculty, received the L.W. Nixon Award. The L.W. Nixon award honors several years of outstanding service to the Butler Theatre Department. 

The following students received their individual awards including: 

Christian Watkins of Wichita: Best Actor for TRULY FRANK 

Chelsie Penner of Newton: Best Actress for THE BALLAD OF KATE THE SHREW 

Caden Runnalls of Conway Springs: Best Supporting Actor for THE BALLAD OF KATE THE SHREW, “#Influencer” Award, Best Running Crew for COTTON GIRLS 

Ryan Smith of Bel Aire: Best Supporting Actor for THE PAJAMA GAME 

Hannah Johnson of Potwin: Best Supporting Actress for THE BALLAD OF KATE THE SHREW 

Jacob Phillips of Newton: Best Cameo Actor for THE BALLAD OF KATE THE SHREW 

Braden Ford of Rosehill: Best Male Technician  

Bailey Camien of El Dorado: Best Female Technician 

Jacob Phillips of Newton: Best Male Newcomer
