Butler Instrumental Music Department Presents 2015 Fall Concert
Make plans to attend the Music Department's Fall Concert next week.
The Butler Community College Music Department will present its fall instrumental music concert Friday, Oct. 16 and 17 at 7:30 pm in the Butler Fine Arts Auditorium on the El Dorado campus.
The concert will feature the Butler Concert Band performing such works as “Elegy for a Young American” by Ronald Lo Presti, “Rough Riders” by Karl King, and “America the Beautiful” arranged by Carmen Dragon. The Show Band will perform arrangements of “There Will Never Be Another You,” “Johnny B. Goode,” and “Mr. Pinstripe Suit,” while the Jazz Band will perform arrangements of “Billie Jean,” “Soul Man,” and “Disco Inferno.” Patrons will also get to hear two smaller chamber ensembles: the Clarinet Quartet and the Mixed Ensemble.
“We try to program our concert with music from a variety of periods and in a variety of styles,” said Director of Bands and Lead Instrumental Music Instructor Brett Martinez, also assistant professor of music. “Whether your favorite music is popular music or traditional marches, we will have something for you. We also try to program some music that patrons may not have heard before. Of particular interest is ‘Elegy for a Young American.’ This piece is dedicated to the memory of President John F. Kennedy and was composed one year after his assassination. It is a powerful and emotional piece.”
This year’s band program saw a large increase in enrollment. Of this new group, Martinez says, “We have a great group of talented, dedicated students. I am very excited about the growth of the program. We finished last year with 42 in the Concert Band. We currently have 74 in the Band. Our Jazz Ensemble and Show Band also have a more balanced instrumentation. More importantly, the students are working hard and improving individually and as an ensemble.”
